Who we are

A hybrid training community built for people who take it seriously.

Ed Tung and Justin Ong looked around and couldn't find what they were looking for. Run clubs were everywhere but most were social groups. Nobody really cared about getting faster. Fitness classes were structured but disconnected. An hour of circuits, then nothing. Neither gave you both things at once.

What they wanted was the intersection: real training and a community of people who took it seriously. So they built it. Free sessions, real coaching, no gym walls.

About the name

In racing, the first heat is where the fastest athletes run.

We named this session after that moment. Not because you need to be elite to show up. Because the decision to train seriously is a choice most people don't make. Showing up to the first heat is enough.

First Heat is also where most zone6 stories start. This is the on-ramp. You don't need to be ready. You just need to show up.

Is this really free?

Yes. 100% free, no catch. We built zone6 because we wanted quality coaching to be accessible. First Heat is our way of opening that up to anyone who wants to train.

Where exactly is Percy Perry Stadium?

Percy Perry Stadium is at Town Centre Park in Coquitlam. It's a full athletics track with parking on site. Search "Percy Perry Stadium Coquitlam" in Google Maps and it'll take you straight there.

Do I need to be fit?

No. Everything is scaled to your level. Whether you're returning to training or preparing for competition, you'll be coached at the right intensity. All fitness levels are genuinely welcome.

Who runs this?

First Heat is coached by Ed Tung and Justin Ong. Ed has 17+ years in performance and physique training; Justin holds a BSc Kinesiology from UBC and served in the Singapore Armed Forces. Both compete and have coached athletes at all levels, from complete beginners to competitive racers. Learn more on the About page.

Do I need to sign up every week?

Yes. We ask everyone to RSVP for each session individually. This helps us plan coaching coverage and know who to expect. It takes about 30 seconds and ensures we're ready for the group that shows up.

What should I bring?

Running shoes, water, and a towel. Dress for outdoor training. Layers are a good idea in the evening. We handle everything else.

Can I bring friends?

Please do. Just make sure each person reserves their own spot so we can plan coaching coverage accordingly.

What if it rains?

We train rain or shine. If conditions are genuinely unsafe, we'll notify all registered attendees by noon on the day of the session.

How many spots are available?

Limited, to keep coaching quality high. Registration closes once we hit capacity. If you're interested, reserve early.
